First, you’ll need a new component: the piezo buzzer. This is a simple component that you can make produce tones of different pitches by applying different voltages.
There are passive and active piezos, which often look very similar. For this project, you need a passive piezo buzzer. If you’re not sure whether you have the right one, apply 5V voltage directly from your Arduino by connecting one leg to 5V and the other to GND. Does the piezo start beeping? Then it’s the active one. If it remains silent, it’s the passive piezo that you need here. Active piezos also often have two legs of different lengths (like an LED), where the longer one is the anode.
Mount your piezo on your breadboard next to the other components as follows:

In the next lesson, you’ll use your potentiometer to generate tones of different pitches. The further you turn to the right, the higher the tone.
